QUADRESSENCIAS DVD RELEASED
Daniel’s ballet Quadressencias, which received wide public acclaim on its two sold-out seasons, has been released on DVD. Performed by the UCS Symphony Orchestra (cond. M. Schmiedt), with the Caxias do Sul Dance Co. (coreog. Ney Moraes), the work was inspired on the four elements of nature: fire, air, water and earth. NOVO CD: CANÇÃO DO PORTO
Daniel is releasing his first disc of songs, Canção do Porto, performed by some of Brazil’s leading singers, with a large supporting band playing a variety of Brazilian rhythnms, such as samba and baião.
Daniel is the artist with most nominations for the Açorianos Music Prize 2013. His CDs Cameratas & Consorts and Porto Allegro, released by the UFRGS Graduate Music Program, have received eight nominations in the Classical and Instrumental categories.
Daniel is now endorsed by d’Addario strings, one of the leading strings manufacturer worldwide. The collaboration is done through Musical Express, d’Addario’s exclusive distributor in Brazil.
At the end of 2012, Daniel won three prizes. Porto Alegre’s Fumproarte will finance a disc with Daniel’s songs performed by the leading pop singers from Southern Brazil. Rio Grande do Sul’s Secretary of Culture will promote a solo concert tour throughout the state. The UFRGS Guitar Festival, coordinated by Daniel, was the only Brazilian project to win the Ibermusicas prize, which will allow the event, to be hosted in June, to invite internationally renown guitarists from five Latin-American countries.
TWO NEW CDs
In 2013, Daniel is releasing two new CDs, financed by the UFRGS Graduate Music Program. Cameratas & Consorts contains chamber works by Daniel from the last twenty years, while Porto Allegro presents a compilation of guitar music from Southern Brazil written in the past five decades. Most of the repertoire from both is made up of premiere recordings.
NEW CD RELEASED IN URUGUAY
Daniel’s new CD, Concierto del Plata, recorded in Montevideo, features works by Uruguayan composers written in the last decades. Daniel is joined by guitarist Sérgio Cabrera and harpsichord players Laura and Nives Dearmas. The disc has received two nominations for the Açorianos prize.
PRIZE AT THE MOENDA DA CANÇÃO FESTIVAL
In August, 2011, Daniel won the Best Arranger prize at the 25th Moenda da Canção Festival, in Brazil, with his song Rendeiro Baião de Mim. The song, with lyrics by Felipe Azevedo, was performed by singer Angela Jobim.
FUNARTE PRIZE – NATIONWIDE TOUR WITH STRING QUARTET
Daniel was awarded the Classical Music Circuit Prize 2010, given by the National Arts Foundation (Funarte). As a result, in September he will perform works by Brazilian composers throughout the country (see tour dates below), accompanied by a string quartet of outstanding musicians specially reunited for this project.
SONORA BRASIL 2009
Daniel was invited by the SESC (Brazil’s Social Service of Commerce) to do a nationwide tour as part of the Sonora Brasil project. It comprises 80 concerts in 20 different States, between the months of May and August. Daniel will perform works by composers from the South of Brazil and will share the stage with guitarist João Pedro Borges, who will play pieces from the Northeast. MUSIC AT THE HOSPITAL PROJECT WINS THE AÇORIANOS PRIZE
Daniel was awarded in 2009 the Açorianos Prize for the project Sarau no Hospital (Music at the Hospital), created and coordinated by him at the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA). Developed as an outreach project at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, it has brought concerts and workshops to over 2000 patients. Read more about Music at the Hospital.
MUSICIANS FROM BRAZIL ENCYCLOPEDIA
Musicians from Brazil: An Instrumental Encyclopedia is already online (in Portuguese). It is the first knowledge base entirely dedicated to Brazilian instrumental music, from the nineteenth century to the present day. Each entry includes, in addition to detailed information, interviews made with the musicians specially for the encyclopedia. The article about Daniel can be read here.
Daniel has won, for the second time, the Açorianos Prize for Best Arranger. The prize was given for the arrangements of Daniel’s new CD, New Transcriptions for 2 Guitars Vol. 1. The Music Department of the Brazilian Federal University, where Daniel teaches, was also awarded a prize for its centennial anniversary.
MUSIK IM KRANKENHAUS – Music at the Hospital project in Germany
In December 2007, Daniel has created in Berlin the Musik im Krankenhausproject. It consists of recitals for the patients and the Elderly Home residents of the Elisabeth Klinik hospital, performed by students of the Universität der Künste. Prof. Michael Betzner shares the coordination and shall continue the project after Daniel’s return to Brazil. Musik im Krankenhaus aims to bring joy to the patients, while encouraging students to use same of their time and talent to the benefit of those who cannot attend regular concerts. It was inspired on a similar project, Sarau no Hospital, which Daniel has been coordinating in Brazil since 2006. View pictures from the project.
NEW CD RELEASED IN EUROPE
New Transcriptions for 2 Guitars Vol. 1, is Daniel’s new CD, in duo with guitarist Daniel Göritz. Released by the German label Kreuzberg Records, it features new arrangements of works by Beethoven, Chopin and Schubert. The scores will be published by Editions Margaux – AMA Verlag.
POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN GERMANY
Daniel received a grant from the Brazilian Ministry of Education (Capes) for an 8-month post-doctoral fellowship in Berlin. During that period, Daniel will teach and develop research activities at the Universität der Künste and the Hochschule für Musik Hans Eisler. While there, Daniel will be playing recitals to promote his new CD. The return to Brazil is scheduled for 2008.
TWO NEW ARTICLES PUBLISHED
The January issue of the Continente Multicultural magazine has an article by Daniel on the influence of classical music on the work of Tom Jobim (it can be read here). Daniel also published the findings of his joint research with Thiago Colombo on the articulations in J. S. Bach’s Ciaccona, in the academic periodical Música Hodie (Universidade Federal de Goiânia – UFG). NEW CD RELEASED
Daniel’s new CD, Coisas da Vida (Things of Life), with clarinet player Wilfried Berk and special guest Thiago de Mello, has been released. Maria Luiza Kfouri (Music News / Discos do Brasil) wrote about Coisas da Vida: “A repertoire of extremely good taste, performed with rare competence and virtuosity. The best term to define it is delight.”

CLARINET CONCERTO RELEASED ON CD IN THE USA:
Daniel’s Concerto for Clarinet and String Orchestra has just been released in the United States on the CD The 20th Century Clarinet Concerto: Bavicchi, Hindemith & Wolff”. Gary Dranch is the soloist, accompanied by the Ulbra Chamber Orcestra (cond. Tiago Flores) and the Buenos Aires Philharmonic (cond. Arkady Leytush). MUSIC AT THE HOSPITAL:
Daniel created and is coordinating the project Sarau no Hospital (Soirée at the Hospital), to promote recitals and workshops for the patients of the Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre (HCPA). Developed as an outreach project at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, its concerts and workshops will be given by the students and faculty members of the University’s Music Department. Sarau no Hospital aims to bring joy and hope to patients of such diverse areas as psychiatry and child oncology.
